Proposed Realignments for District 112, TMNZ North

What is a realignment, and why do it?

Every year, each District is asked to check that the number of clubs in good standing is consistent across all Areas, and the number of Areas is consistent across all Divisions. Toastmasters works best when those numbers are between 4 and 6, and this also follows the commercial “span of control” principle.  These checks can lead to clubs moving from one area to another at the end of a Toastmasters year (June 30). That movement is called a “realignment”.

In recent years, the number of clubs has fallen significantly. The realignment for 2025/2026 recognises this and is a complete overhaul of the structure of District 112. To meet Toastmasters requirements, it will be necessary to reduce the number of Divisions, as outlined below.

Relaignments are done under the District Alignments Committee. This committee is operating under the criteria specified in TI Protocol 7.0: District Structure / Club Assignments

How does this affect my club?

Realignment does not affect club activities in any way. The main change is in contests, in that a club may find itself competing with different clubs than in the previous year.

Please remember that these changes are proposed only, by our Realignment Committee,  and are subject to change. This is why no clubs are mentioned specifically below. Division names are also provisional; the names have been adopted to remove confusion with the existing Division letters.

When does all this happen?

You can expect to see more details either via email, from your Area Directors, or from newsletters.  Broadly, though:

  • An interim report for review by the District Executive is due on March 3rd
  • Area Directors discuss the effects with clubs in their six-monthly visit or when necessary
  • The proposal that will go to the District Council is due on April 24th
  • The District Council ratifies the realignment on May 17th
  • Should the “good standing” of any club change after then, the Alignments Committee may make changes up to June 15th
  • The new alignment takes effect on July 1st

If all goes well, what will the District look like on July 1st?

The proposal reduces the number of Divisions from eight to six, as follows:

Northern Division

Clubs in Northland and the Auckland North Shore (East of the Harbour)

Harbour Division

Auckland City Clubs between the Harbour and State Highway 1, and North of the Tamaki River

Central Division

Auckland City Clubs West of State Highway 1 and North of the Tamaki River

Manukau Division

Auckland City Clubs South of the Tamaki River.

Western Division

Clubs in the Waikato, Bay of Plenty, Gisborne and Hawke’s Bay

Southern Division

Clubs in Taranaki, Whanganui, Manawatu, Tararua, and Horowhenua

Maps showing approximate Division boundaries will be published shortly when available.
